Collapsing or Falling Asleep and Looking Far Younger
Warnings: Canon typical violence
The worst thing about moments like this was the fact that when she was unconscious, Nott looked far more like a human child than she did a goblin teenager. (That wasn’t true: the worst thing about moments like this was that it reminded him of them. The worst thing about moments like this was how sharply and unforgivingly they reminded him that he could do nothing, that he had never been able to do anything, that what little power lay in his hands was useless when he needed it.)
Caleb really needs to not be thinking about things like that, though, because right now they’re fighting a wild owlbear and they’re losing and Nott is unconscious on the forest floor. Her hair is spread across her face (like a child’s in sleep, like a child he knew) and there’s a little blood at the corner of her mouth. (He’s seen that before, too.) Her fingers, usually curled and clutched tightly around something, whether it’s her weapon or her flask or her trinkets, are loose and unfurled against the dirt, like the hand of a little girl on her pillow.
Caleb doesn’t think about his fear, or the beast looming up onto its hind legs in front of him, standing tall enough to block out his view of the moon. He ducks and he runs forward and his heart gets left somewhere behind him in his panic. He slips his hands under Nott’s too-slender back and her skinny legs and he lifts her and she’s almost weightless, and he holds her close and he keeps running, diving back into the tree line.

“Scanlan, to his embarrassment, is not third but fourth to figure it out. He learns this when he mentions it to Pike one day, whilst they’re hiking through the countryside. “Have you ever noticed that Vax reacts rather powerfully to physical touch? Not sexually, though I suppose he might. But contact from his friends seems to settle him like a drug.” Pike raises an eyebrow at him, and gods help him but she’s as beautiful as she was the day he met her.
“Well, yes. Hadn’t you?” She asks the question politely, but Scanlan knows her well enough to know that this is Pike’s gentle way of wondering how it had took him so long. He smirks to hide his discomfort.”
Vox Machina notice something about Vax.
Or: the story of how Vox Machina get to know Vax a little better and he, in turn, gives them a little more of his trust.
Chapters: 1/1 Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Scanlan Shorthalt & Vax’ildan Characters: Vax’ildan (Critical Role), Scanlan Shorthalt, Vox Machina, Delilah Briarwood, Sylas Briarwood Additional Tags: Post-Episode Coda: s1e25, Hurt/Comfort, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Found Family Summary:
Scanlan is rarely openly concerned for them, even now, and part of Vax hurts to reject him like this. But most of him is scared, and humiliated, and hurting. Most of him has never known how to trust anyone but his sister, and even then, there have always been things that he’s kept from Vex’ahlia. “Worried? That’s not like you. I assure you that if you’re concerned about my ability to keep up with the rest of you in battle, I continue to be rather handy with a knife.” The deflection is easy, and Vax knows as soon as he says it that Scanlan doesn’t buy a word of it.
( A little coda to episode 25, about Vax dealing with his brush with death and Scanlan Shorthalt being a surprisingly good friend. )

Warnings: Strong language, violence – basically the boys are adult heroes
A part of Shouto that feels far too close to his father comes crashing over his conscious mind as he grabs a fistful of Deku’s costume and drags him onto his toes. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” His voice is hoarse, and his eyes are stinging, and he decides to blame that on the smoke and not the recently deceased villain on the other side of the room.
Deku, for his part, with a mask half destroyed and wide eyes already streaming with tears – the smoke, again, it’s the smoke – doesn’t try to pull away from him. As quickly as Shouto’s anger had risen, it disappears, and his grip loosens on Deku’s shirt, fingers uncurling from where they’d been clenched painfully tight. He takes a deep breath, and chokes, and thinks that they should probably get out of the burning building before it’s too late. “Sorry.”
Deku shakes his head, and rubble and ash fall out of his hair as he does so. “No, it’s alright.” He hesitates, and Shouto can’t look at him. “You’re shaking.”
Warnings: adult women discussing adult things, and it gets a bit steamy at the end, but no explicit action.
“I’m only here to establish an alibi.” Jirou Kyouka murmurs the words softly enough that Momo makes a point of tilting her head to hear them. If that makes her hair fall over her bare shoulder and catches Jirou’s attention, well, thank the universe for happy accidents. She offers Jirou a polite smile: as if they haven’t met a hundred times before today, as if neither of them is armed to the teeth, as if they haven’t both tried and failed to assassinate the other.
“I’m sure.” Momo lets Jirou loop her arm through hers: the tuxedo suits her, she muses, absently, letting her eyes run lazily over the way the satin presses along the lines of Jirou’s body. Jirou cocks an eyebrow at her as she leads her towards the centre of the casino. The thick carpet is red as fresh blood, and it turns even Momo’s stiletto heels into nothing more than a cat’s footstep. The ceiling drips with chandeliers.
“See something you like?” Jirou’s tone is dry, and faintly amused. Momo lifts one shoulder, pretending not to notice the way the silk of the her dress slips a little further down her upper arm.
“You said you wanted an alibi. I assume I’m not meant to be your cousin.”
This prompts a wider grin from Jirou: one full of mischief that’s mostly a flash of canine and a dimple. “Don’t go saying that, princess, I’m sure you’d make excellent gal pal material.”
