Caleb: What is a “watch”?

Nott: Oh, he only knows them by the Zemnian name.

Caleb: You mean like a guard?

Nott: No, like a… a clockrusen? That’s how you say it in your language I think. A clockenticken.

Caleb: You are adorably fucking wrong right now.

Nott, confidently: I’ve been picking up little bits of the language.

so first, I adored that episode.

Second please talk to me about headcanons!!!!! (Spoilers for Critical Role Episode 8, Campaign 2 under the cut)

God I am so happy that we know more about Jester now. Like, I’m so excited.

I continue to believe the Molly is an amnesiac theory, at least until proven otherwise.

‘Child-bearing age’ ouch, but I think I see what Sam was trying to do – namely emphasising the difference between Nott’s clans’ social norms and those of her new friends. Six to nine, and nine being decided on, puts her at a rough human 16, if we take Goblin maturity as 12. I’m happy to accept that.

CALEB.

First, I really enjoyed how much everyone kicked off the session trying to crack Liam’s walls. I’m clinging onto the ‘Caleb had kids’ theory because Reasons, but I’m starting to suspect it’s not canon. My loose hc had been that Caleb had a modest family and lost them in a fire.

Though I will say – in defence of the dad Caleb theory, that he seemed to feel very strongly about the way a parent should behave etc when Jester was sharing with them. That felt like it was getting close to something personal.

I haven’t given up the theory that Caleb is traumatised by fire specifically: based on Liam’s reaction to fanart of That moment and the way he handled the glove and the campfire. I don’t think it’s any fire, and this kinda has me leaning towards the Caleb as a soldier who’s gone AWOL theory that I’ve seen floating around. That his trauma is specifically related to combat.

Also, anyone else note Caleb’s vehement disenchantment with the Empire? We know that Beau tends to be on the side of the proletariat/guillotine, but it was interesting to see how upset/frustrated Caleb was about it too.

My headcanon: Caleb was a soldier who lost his family. Possibly to marauding soldiers of the Dwendalian Empire. He’s traumatised both by what he’s done and what was done to him. He projects onto Nott, but he can’t stand to think about what he’s lost, so he calls her his little sister and tries very hard not to think about children.

What I think is more likely in canon: Caleb was a soldier. He’s traumatised both by what he’s done and what was done to him. He’s lost people: he’s yet to tell us about anyone else in his family. He finds Nott and she’s literally all he has, and he’s protective of her because he’s lost everyone else. She’s his companion, his sister, his friend. He wouldn’t have a panic attack seeing a campfire, but he might if he had to stab someone. This could also explain why despite his loud reactions to being in pain, he also seems to take injuries somewhat in stride. I mean, I wouldn’t be able to just yank three arrows out of my body, even if I knew magical healing was incoming.

So yeah, that’s where I’m at. Thoughts? Theories? Please talk to me about them it’d be the best
