Why do my interests in canning, couponing, and homesteading overlap so often with blogs with titles like ‘The Obedient Housewife’?

Like, I’m like, “I want to learn to make soap and farm,” and suddenly I see 500 “traditional family” motherfuckers like no you are mistaken. I am just a simple lesbian anticapitalist looking to limit my consumerism as much as possible.

‘these fun crafts will keep your kids occupied until your husband gets home!’ no i want a clothespin crown for me

As a nerd who homesteads, let me share the data I have gathered!

First is my megalist of homesteading-related links I’ve gathered over the years. I’m a mod over at r/homesteading and this is where I’ve put a lot of good sources (not all, admittedly some are still sitting in my bookmark folder waiting to be added). The search function at reddit is wretched, but there’s also been lots of good things I’ve shared there too. Please note that many of these sources are not actual webpages, but PDFs. That’s not an accident, PDFs are where you find the really good in-depth stuff.

Many of my sources are from the Extension Service. They won’t try to relate to you based on your lifestyle or sexual identity or religion or whatever, but due to that, they also won’t be alienating you either.

image

The Cooperative Extension Service (US only) exists in all 50 states and in most counties. It is taxpayer funded. The Extension Service exists to help people become more self sufficient, for farmers to be more successful, for people to be healthier, for kids to be well adjusted, to figure out how to grow the best plants in your area, etc. Some county offices even offer cheap classes in things like gardening, canning, soap making, and they’re taught by people with training in these areas (I once heard a great talk on composting from a soil scientist that way). Do you want to know what type of plant something is? Do you need help figuring out a plant disease or pest issue? You can now contact them online and get great info.

I HIGHLY recommend checking out your state’s extension service website, because they do offer different types of information, depending on what is grown/raised where you are (and how well funded they are). My county extension puts out a monthly gardening newsletter, which includes a helpful ‘this is the time of the year to do —-’ part.

Here’s an example from North Carolina – check out that left sidebar

Here’s an example from California – this website is HUGE so dig around

Here’s an example from New York – they have a calendar at the bottom, showing how they have things like hydroponic and urban agriculture workshops coming up.

image

Interested in raising animals? Penn State Extension is really really good. They have tons of free materials and courses available online, some I pulled for my megalist at the top of this.

National Center for Home Food Preservation – they cover the important aspects of food safety, and also have some recipes. Many state Extension Service websites will have lots more recipes.

If you have kids, check out 4-H programs for them. It’s part of the local public school system here. If you’re homeschooling, you can also purchase their science-filled educational and self sufficiency materials (materials are divided by age ranges – Cloverbud Member: ages 5-8, Junior Member: ages 9-13, Senior Member: ages 14-19). One of my coworkers is in 4-H, she’s still in high school, and last year she raised an award-winning heifer.

Congress grants the money for funding these programs, and they’re connected with various universities. There’s a level of cutting edge scientific knowledge and academic rigor you don’t find in blogs or even most books. There’s LOTS of homesteading books filled with outdated information like ‘till the earth every year’ hell I still have older coworkers who do it and I’m trying to figure out how to gently tell them that they’re destroying their soil that way, and that there’s better methods now, methods grounded in science.

my favorite thing about dungeons and dragons is that you can study for it alone, wherever you are, and also the fact that i found an entire database of free resources about 5.0  that are basically all you need to play except for an actual campaign lol

I see your free resources with no campaigns and raise you This

If you’re unfamilar with D&D or want a less complicated version, I recommend Fate. https://fate-srd.com You can print out  out the character sheets or just keep them on hand in a PDF / image file. The rules are a bit more fast and loose, but still really fun!

For the people who follow me and know nothing about DnD but want to

If anyone has any recs for King Arthur-related films/shows, I’ll be grateful!

I already watched Excalibur 1981, Merlin 1998 miniseries, and King Arthur Legend of the Sword (2017).

Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the best (the one and only) arthurian movie ever made!

About other fun arthurian tv series:

  • Legend of King Arthur (1979 tv show) is one of the best arthurian series, in my opinion. The quality of costumes is not great, but the characterization is on point especially for Morgana and Mordred.
  • Camelot (starz) is also an… interesting show. The plot is a bit all over the place and Arthur is not great, but Morgana is the real star. Also, Sir Kay, Igraine and Merlin are quite interesting too.
  • Kaamelott (the French one) is THE BEST. The first three seasons are just comedic sketches (and no English subtitles) but season 5 and 6 are really dramatic and well written (also the dvds have English subtitles). I started watching this show from season 4, and I didn’t really need to go back to season 1-3 to understand the plot.
  • Mists of Avalon miniseries. While I am not a fan of the book, the miniseries is a softer version that I really enjoy.

and some arthurian movies (especially if you don’t mind some trashy fun ones):

  • I love Connecticut Yankee movies, but my favourite ones are A Knight in Camelot, the 1989 Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court and A young Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s court (just for how Morgana is written!).
  • Camelot (1967) is my favourite arthurian movie alongside Monty Python. This is the movie version of the musical and it is the movie that actually made me love Lancelot. It focuses on Arthur, Guinevere and Lancelot.
  • Sword of Lancelot is somehow one of my favourite movies. It might be the fact that Mordred is adorable and has a cute hawk always on his shoulder.
  • Merlin and the Sword is also a fun cheesy movie. It has basically everything: evil Morgana and Mordred plotting, Gawain and Ragnelle, Arthur Lancelot and Guinevere, Merlin and Nimue.

Let me know if you really don’t mind… the trashier ones. I have more!

Thank you so much for those recs! I don’t mind trashy, as long as it’s fun to watch. (I didn’t like Legend of the Sword because it was so incoherent and badly cut, so there are limits.)

Sword of Lancelot and Merlin and the Sword (and Young Connecticut) are pretty trashy already!

Other trashy fun ones are (in my opinion):

  • Dragons of Camelot. The 100% bad acting, BAD movie, trash, but so so fun.
  • Excalibur Kid. This is actually one of my favourite ones because it has a lovely teen Morgause that uses her magic to transport into Camelot a random modern day teenager able to get the sword from the stone, because he is easier to manipulate than Arthur himself.
  • Guinevere 1994 and First Knight are more on the “meh” side than tun trashy (they take themselves too seriously), but I actually enjoyed them. They are both about the Guinevere-Arthur-Lancelot triangle focusing on the true love between Guinevere and Lancelot. First Knight in particular has a lovely Guinevere.
  • Merlin and King Arthur the Lion King is like SO RANDOM. Arthur is a lion, Mordred is a kitten, Morgana is the evil cat.
  • Spamalot (the Monty Python and the Holy Grail’s musical)
  • The Adventures of Sir Lancelot (tv) is a lovely series of self contained episodes focusing on Lancelot. It’s more random adventures than actual arthurian themes, but there is a lot of Merlin and Guinevere too.
  • La Legende du Roi Arthur (musical) is… something. The music is very catchy, and it’s definitely fun (a bit overdramatic)

The Black Panther score dropped today 🔥

as amazing as it is, I am highkey annoyed at how some of my fave tunes from the film are not on this thing

Like does anyone know the song that is playing when we are first introduced to Shuri’s lab?

or the track playing when Nakia and T’challa are galavanting about in the Birnin Zana? (it sounds senegalese…if I’m not mistaken)

It may be on Kendrick’s album.

https://open.spotify.com/album/3pLdWdkj83EYfDN6H2N8MR?si=Oy7H7l69Qym7mg23Jw0gQA

it’s not 😦 that kendrick album is amazing though, I literally haven’t listened to anything else since it dropped tbh

Mozzy – Sleep Walkin (Official Video)

I FOUND THE SONGS!!

the one playing in Shuri’s lab is by South African artist Babes Wodumo – Wololo (feat. Mampintsha)

and the one playing when Nakia and T’challa are in wakanda walking about is by Malian artist Idrissa Soumaoro – Bèrèbèrè (feat. Ali Farka Touré)

also here are other songs that appeared in the movie that are not featured in the Kendrick Lamar Black Panther soundtrack or the Ludwig Göransson Black Panther movie score:

(African American) Mozzy – Sleep Walkin

(African American)Too $hort – In The Trunk (in the opening oakland scene)
