This is the same anon who sent that prompt ask: do you know of any LGBT women of color I can follow? I just don’t see anyone in the media who I can relate to. I’m not out yet, so seeing representation in the media would mean so much to me.

In fiction: The Bold Type and Black Lightning are awesome shows for qwoc rep. In comics, check out Motorcrush, Black Panther (two of the Dora Milaje are in love!) and Young Avengers, as well as The Wicked and the Divine and Saga. In podcasts, Alice Isn’t Dead and Within the Wires are both dramas about qwoc, performed and written by qwoc.
If you want to follow qwoc celebrities – Janelle Monae recently came out, and is doing some pretty awesome stuff! Tessa Thompson is out and proud, Azealia Banks is Bi, Lena Waithe is an amazing writer, producer and actress currently in a relationship with Alana Mayo, and of course Samira Wiley is happily married to Lauren Morrelli. Plus, if you’d like to see more trans women, always check out Laverne Cox – and Janet Mock is pretty damn cool too.

🍀 – what’s your fav thing abt being lgbt?
Honestly? Everyone is SO pretty and SO wonderful. I am ridiculously grateful that I don’t have to or want to think about gender when it comes to attraction. I’m just sort of endlessly surrounded by people who I think are brilliant, and that’s pretty magical.
🌠 – advice for young lgbt people?
Find other lgbt+ people!!! Seek out safe, trusting environments. I went to an LGBT+ youth support group: it really helped me figure out who I was and feel comfortable with that. LGBT+ charities EXIST to help you as a young person figure out who you are safely and without judgement. If you’re not out to your friends or family? That’s ok too! Tell the workers. They know what that means and how it feels, they’ll help you be discrete. I was at boarding school, and my group told my school they were a mental health charity so that I didn’t have to come out before I was ready. Workers will give you advice on how to be safe with family, and with any predatory individuals. You get free sex ed that actually applies to you, and just generally meet a bunch of cool people.
My other piece of advice would be: seek out LGBT+ media. There is nothing quite as wonderful as seeing people like you being heroes, being happy, and being in love. Read books, read comics, watch TV and movies. You’re on tumblr, so you probably know Steven Universe, and Brooklyn 99, watch Sense8, watch Yuri on Ice, read ‘Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal’ and ‘Oranges are Not the Only Fruit’. Read ‘Trans Like Me’ by CN Lester. Read The Wicked and the Divine, and DC’s Bombshells series (all the queer ladies). Find representations of yourself that you like and feel comfortable with. Don’t be afraid to question things, don’t be afraid to ask for more, or better, or different.
