What is one thing you like to think about before you go to sleep?
I’ve got a bunch of oc’s. One of them is essentially a space knight called Chris. They’re the gentlest character I’ve ever imagined, and this probably sounds kinda silly, but when I’m having a hard time or having trouble sleeping, I imagine them sitting next to me and just being quiet with me till I feel calmer. Alternatively, I imagine I’m falling into blackness. Like not darkness – liquid black, that wraps around me. It has no feeling, and I’m just kinda floating/falling. I find it helps me avoid bad dreams, for some reason.
What’s the most useful thing someone has taught you?
My headmaster in primary school once said there’s no such thing as mistakes, only learning opportunities. He also said that we listen most closely to what’s most important us. He was a good headteacher, and for an over-achieving perfectionist, it was good to learn that trying is more than half the journey. (if that makes sense).
When you think of home, what kind of smells do you remember?
Rain, cut grass, firewood, dogs, roast potatoes and the smell of resin/violins.
Do you remember the first time you saw snow?
Not really – but I used to live in Yorkshire when I was very young. I’m a winter baby, and I remember snow being one of the best parts of that.
If you could produce a patronus, what memory would you use?
This is kind of difficult. Probably a memory with my grandfather who passed away. He used to take my brother and I to go pick strawberries in summer, and we’d have strawberries and cream for breakfast. Probably that one.
What kind of shoes do you usually wear?
Trainers/boots. Anything I can stomp in without tripping myself up!
Scarves or fuzzy socks?
I have an unholy number of scarves.
What is your hot drink of choice?
I adore hot drinks, honestly I couldn’t pick one. I have tea, coffee and hot chocolate most days, and one of my favourite things in the world is mulled wine in winter.
What’s the first time you remember feeling inspired to create something?
When I was maybe 5 or 6, my parents got me a notebook made of banana paper – it smelled like bananas. I started writing poems about how my mum was on the phone a lot and my dad’s favourite football team. Never really stopped.
Did you have a favorite toy when you were a child?
Not exactly? I did have my ‘babies’, which were a large group of cuddly toys that numbered: Rosie and Poppet the rag dolls, Nanny bear the teddy bear (from my Nan), Alfred the teddy bear (from my dad) and Baby, a plastic and fabric baby doll. I was a very original child when it came to naming things.
What song makes you feel nostalgic?
So, so many. Probably the most powerful one is Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd.
